Did You Know . . .
05/13/2013
There is a reason credit unions are exempt from income taxes. It's because all credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives that are owned by their members. And while the members come from all walks of life, by and large those who belong to credit unions are everyday people - 96 million of them, in fact, across the U.S. As not-for-profits, credit unions return what they earn to their members in the forms of lower rates on loans, higher returns on savings and lower and/or fewer fees. In fact, for every $1 of their tax exemption, credit unions return $10 to consumers in better rates and lower fees. That's a solid investment in our communities.
Now, some (mostly banks) say credit unions should pay income taxes, even though it was banks (not credit unions) that took huge governmental bailouts. The truth is, if credit unions were taxed - and remained not-for-profits - it's unlikely their members could continue to receive lower rates on loans, higher savings return, and low fees. You might say taxing credit unions is really a tax on 96 million credit union members. To learn more about credit unions, visit aSmarterChoice.org.

ATM Fee Change Reminder
04/24/2013
As stated in the January 2013 Newsletter, the fee structure for ATM transactions changed on April 1, 2013 to the following:
- Unlimited free transactions at FDLCU owned ATMs located at 91 N. Pioneer Rd. and 126 N. Main Street (Police station parking lot).
- 5 free transactions per month at ATMs not owned by FDLCU.
- $1.00 for every additional transaction at ATMs not owned by FDLCU.
As always, you may be assessed a fee by the financial institution who owns the ATM.
Why the changes? Each time you use an ATM that belongs to someone else, your credit union has to pay that ATM owner a fee and our fees have increased. Why not use an FDLCU ATM so we all save?
If your debit card is tied to your checking account, you may receive cash back with no fee when using your PIN at participating merchants.

Important Notice for our Members re: Credit Card Surcharges
01/10/2013
Beginning January 27, 2013, Visa and MasterCard will allow merchants to pass along their payment processing costs to consumers who pay with a credit card. This would mean that a merchant who chooses to exercise this new right could impose a surcharge, sometimes referred to as a "checkout fee," that could increase your credit card purchase amount by as much as 4% (maximum allowed). Under the settlement:
-The surcharge cannot exceed the amount that the merchant actually pays to accept credit cards--normally between 1.5% and 3% of the transaction amount.
-Surcharges can be imposed on credit card transactions only, not on purchases made with debit cards or prepaid cards.
-Merchants must disclose the credit card surcharge clearly--at the store entrance and the point of sale or on the homepage if the merchant does business on the Internet.
-The disclosure must include the amount of the surcharge, the fact that the fee is being charged by the merchant, and that the fee does not exceed the merchant's cost to accept credit cards.
-The dollar amount of the surcharge must appear on the transaction receipt.
Merchants are not allowed to impose a credit card surcharge in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma or Texas, where such fees are prohibited under state law. For more information go to www.knowyourcard.org

America Saves Week: Feb 19-26!
02/06/2012
Set a Goal, Make a Plan, Save Automatically - That's what this year's America Saves Week is all about! There are many ways to save, but saving automatically is one of the most effective ways. Your Credit Union has lots of ways to help you with that. You can:
- Have a money automatically transferred to your savings account from your direct deposit to checking (there's NO minimum - start with $1.00 if that's what you can afford!)
- Sign up for Change to Saving. When you use your FDLCU debit card to make a purchase, we'll round up the purchase to the next dollar and transfer the difference to any savings account - even a Christmas Club Savings!
- Open a Spare Savings account to save for something in particular instead of using a credit card.
Let us know how we can help you save!

CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS
05/25/2011
More than 150,000 troops are serving overseas and are away from their families. Cell Phones for Soldiers and McNamara & Thiel Insurance Agency are calling on Wisconsinites to support these brave Wisconsin men & women by donating cell phones are no longer being used. The phones are either re-used or recycled and the money goes to purchase prepaid calling cards for soldiers.
Fond du Lac Credit Union is happy to be a drop off site for your unused cell phones. The collection will run through August 1. Let's provide families with a much-needed connection to their loved ones overseas.
Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, MA with $21 of their own money. Since then, the non-profit organization has raised almost $2 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.

Contact Congress on debit interchange rule delay!
04/15/2011
Ask them to Stop, Study and Start Over
Credit unions issue debit cards and credit cards to their members. Interchange revenue from the use of these cards is vital to credit unions to support the administrative expense of card programs.
Interchange fees allow business costs, including operating expenses, fraud risk management, and the risk of consumer nonpayment, to be shared by the payments participants. As part of the Dodd-Frank Act, Congress enacted provisions that regulate the debit interchange rates and give merchants more control over a consumer’s use of debit cards and credit cards at the point of sale and the route through which the transaction is processed. Further complicating matters, the Dodd-Frank language prohibits the Federal Reserve from taking into consideration all of the costs of the payment system when regulating the debit interchange fee to establish a debit rate that is “reasonable and proportional” to the “incremental” cost of the individual transaction.
Legislation (H.R. 1081 / S. 575) has been introduced in both chambers of Congress to delay the Federal Reserve’s rule and study the impact of interchange fee regulation on consumers, merchants and financial institutions.
Grassroots Action Requested
Please send messages to your federal legislators TODAY urging them to cosponsor S. 575 or H.R. 1081, and thanking those who have cosponsored the bills. Prewritten letters are available at the Credit Union Grassroots Action Center http://capwiz.com/cuna/home/, where you can quickly personalize and send messages to the appropriate legislators based on the address you enter and each legislator’s cosponsorship status.

Doing it for the Kids!
02/15/2011
It's February, and at Fond du Lac Credit Union that means the Chain of Hearts for Children's Miracle Network!
If you've come in to the lobby or stopped through the drive-up, you've probably been asked if you'd like to purchase a "link" for $1 or a "heart" for $5.
We do it for the kids. The funds raised go to our own Children's Hospital - and that's important to us. Our Friday jean-day donations this month will also go to Children's Miracle Network.
So when you're asked, why not donate a dollar for the kids? They're worth it!

New Credit Card Scam Alert
02/10/2011
The scam works like this:
Person calling says - 'This is (name), and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My Badge number is 12460, Your card has been flagged for an un usual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank). Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a marketing company based in Arizona?' When you say 'No', the caller continues with, 'Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?' You say 'yes'. The caller continues - 'I will be starting a Fraud Investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 1- 800 number listed on the back of your card (1-800-VISA) and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. 'Do you need me to read it again?' Here's the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works - The caller then says, 'I need to verify you are in possession of your card'. He'll ask you to 'turn your card over and look for some numbers'. There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the last 3 are the Security Numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card. These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the last 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he'll say, 'That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?' After you say no, the caller then thanks you and states, 'Don't hesitate to call back if you do', and hangs up. You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the card number.
Never give out any numbers to someone who is calling YOU! Your financial institution and credt card companies have all your numbers and will never ask for them. Feel free to call us at any time if you are concerned or feel you have been a victim to a scam!
